I lived on lighthouses from the age of 12 until I left home at 18. After moving to Calgary, a girl I worked with asked me what my dad did for a living. When I told her he was a lighthouse keeper, she thought he cleaned houses - I had to explain to this girl from Saskatchewan what a lighthouse was. Imagine my dad's surprise when I told him he was mistaken for a light housekeeper!

I have some info regarding Lawyer lighthouse.
According to my mother who died at the age of 98 years my grandfather must have been the first keeper there.
She and my grandmother were also there, but my grandfather was drowned during a row-over to Prince Rupert in about 1904 or 1905. She kept the light operating
for about two weeks after he disappeared.

Estevan Point
There are those who feel that it was the big bad Gov't who shelled their own Lightstation in order to get the population behind the war effort. I would like to support the official version. It has been said that this action was taken to get the people in Quebec and the West Coast on side to support the war. I don't think that the people in Quebec would really care if an isolated spot on the West Coast got shelled. The people of Quebec got fully behind the war effort only after the sinking of ships in the St. Lawrence River often in view of towns folk. I don't believe that there was really a problem with getting the West coasters on side as many had already enlisted and were already at war in Europe.
Another author has stated in his book that the shelling was the result of allied surface ships up to no good. Being a sailor I can tell you that sailors do not keep secrets very well and more than 50 years after the war some lower rank member would have blown the whistle on this type of operation. The most convincing evidence is from the Japanese themselves, Commander Yokoda of I-26 is documented in his log entries as having shelled Estevan point. He survived the war and boasted that he shelled Canada and the USA (Santa Barbara).
For more information on this topic to draw your own conclusion - this topic is debated in Don Graham's book "Keepers of the Light", I-Boat Captain author unknown, and Raincoast Chronicles #18.
Thanks Ron. Cheers.

I presume the continuing saga of estevan point is still going on, but one happy hour in the wardroom at Dockyard, esquimalt, the subject of the estevan sub incident came up. Story was that the shell in the museum(maritime) was just a american casing with japanese letting on it and that it was an american sub that thumped a few out, to get flagging canadian war bonds moving and also get the quebecers in the www2 fray. I assume that is all old hat.
Beautiful web site, thank you as i was privileged to visit most of the south coast lights via west coast trail and inner passage lights. Cheers,

I have recently started collecting lighthouse memorabilia and have really enjoyed the website and comments. To me the lighthouse is a symbol of hope, endurance and strength and that someone somewhere will leave a light on for you. Keep your light shining bright.

Have several slides of BC lighthouses taken from Alaska Ferry in 1986. Would appreciate assistance in identification, My guess is Lucy Island, and Bonilla Island, from looking at Donald Graham's book of Lights of the Inside Passage.

Also, I'd like to arrange a visit to the Light at Estevan Point. Any thoughts?

Thanks, Your website is OUTSTANDING!!!!!

I enjoyed this site. My mother and her family (the Wallaces) were raised on the lighthouses of the B.C. coast for 16 years. She still talks of the good memories of living on them.
My dad also worked on a boat called the Alberni taking supplies to many of these light houses. I have sent them this site so they can look at the pictures.

My husband and I were keepers on Green Island, McInnes Island, Pine Island, and Bonilla Island. Loved it! This is a good website, and I enjoyed visiting it.

My wife and I have had and continue to have the privilege of cruising the north central coast of BC. During these visits we look forward to the sighting of each lighthouse. They have become points of familiarity and comfort during our travels. Seeing places such as Dryad and Boat Bluff on your website bring back many fond memories. Thank you.

Hi everyone,
RE: CAPE ST JAMES LIGHTHOUSE - WANT INFORMATION ON THIS LIGHTHOUSE.
SHE IS LOCATED ON THE BC COAST. READ FURTHER.....

I am the granddaughter of Peter Doherty. He was a "Keeper" and he and his family lived on the Cape St. James
Lighthouse at the South end of the Queen Charolette Islands, some time after the 1930 +++.

If anyone has any old or current stories about this lighthouse and her "Keepers" I would really
like to hear from you. Also if you have any old or current pictures I would also like to hear
from you. My Mother would really like some pictures of this old lighthouse.

If anyone knows of any old or new books out on this lighthouse I would also like to hear from you.

E Mail me at your convenience.

Thank you
Maureen

I enjoy visiting your site regularly and have recommended it to my brothers and some friends. I've learned a lot about the lighthouses from this site and by following the different links. Still awaiting word on my own lightkeeper application. Keeping my fingers crossed. I wish you all the best at Addenbroke Light Station. Regards.

Outstanding website! My love for lighthouses started when I was stationed in San Diego, Cal. I spent many evenings watching the sun set from Point Loma light. I had no idea how many of your lights are stilled manned. Where does one apply for those positions? Hope to make it to BC in the next few years and your costal lights will be my main interest. Again, great job on this web page and keep the flame burning.

What a super site. I hope that it will have some effectai changing the minds of the government in their program of de-staffing. We desperately need the lightkeepers all along our coasts.

SO what do you lighthouse people call each other? Is it lighter? I think I noticed the word in one of your emails.

My love of lighthouses first started on our RV trip up the CA., Oregon,& WA. coast. I did get to see so many beautiful lighthouses.
I am now a collector of lighthouses and have many of the ones I have been in.
It is sad that so many of our light houses are now automatic, instead of being manned by people. I hope one day to get to see the lighthouses of BC.
I so enjoy your web page, the pictures and history of the light houses.
Keep up the good work....

Hello, I am so pleased to find that someone has taken the time and opportunity to create this wonderful site. I have loved lighthouses since I was a small child. I am from the east coast and spent lots of time on the beaches with my family. Lighthouses have always been a symbol of tranquility and protection. Keep up the good work
